Nao Kono

Born in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1984, Nao Kono is an award-winning architect who studied architecture at Kyoto University. In 2010, he co-founded Tsumiki Design & Construction with his partner, Momoko Kono, a firm dedicated to participatory renovation, skill-sharing, and the preservation of Japanese timbercraft. In 2023, he joined forces with Bryan Ortega Welch to establish The Red Dot School, an international design/build school located on the small island of Sagishima, conducting deconstruction and reconstruction of vacant wooden houses. Currently, he teaches a design studio and conducts research on participation in construction at the University of Tokyo while raising three daughters in a small city just outside of Tokyo.

Tomoyuki Gondo
Associate Professor of School of Architecture. Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School of the University of Tokyo, Ph. D.Born in 1983 and graduated from the University Tokyo (and its Graduate School of master/doctor also). Researcher for building construction, having done several research on the building system in Asian countries including Japan, China, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand etc. and also having written several books about construction history including prefabricated houses, skyscrapers which have characteristics in construction. Not an architect, but our lab designed several projects and made several pavilions with architects or engineers, such as deconstruction projects, free shape pavilions (tensegrity, bending plywood, meta materials) etc.
